Florida Blue: Health Insurance Plans & Enrollment
Florida Blue offers a wide range of health insurance plans designed to meet the needs of individuals and families across the state. As an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, Florida Blue provides access to a large network of doctors, hospitals, and specialists throughout Florida. Plan Options
Florida Blue offers several types of plans:
- HMO Plans: Health Maintenance Organization plans require members to choose a primary care physician (PCP) who manages their care and provides specialist referrals. These plans generally have lower premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
- PPO Plans: Preferred Provider Organization plans offer more flexibility, allowing members to see any doctor or specialist without a referral. Out-of-network coverage is also available but usually comes with higher costs.
- High-Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs): These plans have lower monthly premiums and higher deductibles. They can be paired with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) to allow members to save money tax-free for medical expenses.
- Catastrophic Plans: Designed for people under 30 or those with certain exemptions, catastrophic plans have low monthly premiums and high deductibles, covering essential health benefits after the deductible is met.
All plans include preventive care, $0 virtual visits, and wellness programs like Better You Strides, which offers rewards for healthy activities.
Enrollment Periods
Enrollment in Florida Blue plans primarily occurs during the Open Enrollment Period (OEP), which runs from November 1 to January 15. Coverage begins January 1 for enrollments completed by December 15, and February 1 for those completed afterward.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEP) are available year-round for those experiencing qualifying life events, such as marriage, birth, job loss, or relocation. Individuals with household incomes below 150% of the federal poverty level may also qualify for year-round enrollment.
